Conservative responses to the limited disclosure of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others lamented how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the redaction procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness appear in portions of the documents, the extensive black blocks raise significant questions about what may be concealed beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for greater transparency.
“The public are raging and disengaging,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions break the statute, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly fails to adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Swing In Support of the Disclosure
However, a segment of conservative pundits and former President allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely censored, and many of the men depicted in pictures have their identities obscured.
Yet a few do not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, allowed some conservative voices to launch the offensive.
“It’s pretty rich how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding those files for months only to dump them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and conceal forever. Therefore they can release as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Muted
However, overall comment on the right was relatively subdued after the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud calls for action that came before the congressional approval to pass a bill mandating the documents' release.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a complete release. In February, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy binders of files that included no new information.
