Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to contest specific calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
